Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup peanut butter, or preferred nut butter

  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, honey, preferred sweetener
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 100 grams melted dark chocolate, optional

See earlier in this post for five protein bar flavour ideas

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients except the melted chocolate chips until a dough forms.
  2. Either shape the dough into bars with your hands or smooth it into a lined 8×8 pan and refrigerate until chilled before cutting it into bars.
  3. For the optional chocolate coating, spread the melted chocolate over the pan before chilling. (I usually stir 2 tsp oil into the melted chocolate for a smoother sauce, but it’s not required.) Or you can dip the bars into the chocolate sauce individually and then chill to set.

Customization options:

  • Try different nut butters, such as almond or cashew butter, for a different flavour.
  • Mix in different nuts or seeds, such as chopped almonds or pumpkin seeds, for added texture and nutrition.
  • Add raisins, for a sweet twist or a hint of chilli for a bit of fire.
  • Switch up the chocolate chips for white chocolate or dark chocolate, or omit them altogether.

Benefits of homemade protein bars:

  • You know exactly what ingredients are in it, so you can avoid any unwanted or unhealthy additives.
  • Perfect for school lunch boxes and after sport treats
  • They’re cheaper and healthier than store-bought protein bars
  • They’re customizable, so you can adjust the ingredients to fit your dietary needs and preferences.
  • They’re a great way to sneak in some extra protein and nutrients into your diet.
  • They’re perfect for on-the-go snacks, pre-workout fuel, or post-workout recovery.
