Generation X — born between 1965 and 1980.
You Grew Up in a World That No Longer Exists
You were the last generation of children to grow up without being guided by social media.
You were the last generation to grow up without ever winning a medal just for participating. You knew how hard it was to win, and if you had the right attitude you’d get there at some stage, or at least come close. Either way, you knew what a winner looked like. You knew the commitment, the effort, the ability it took — because the winners stood out from the crowd, and not everyone got to be one.
You were the last generation to grow up on our own. You weren’t influenced by people you didn’t know, and our sources for fashion and gossip were the monthly Dolly or Cosmopolitan, where you waited patiently for the “Dear Dolly” section, or the forbidden sealed section in Cosmo where we learned about things your parents never discussed with you.
Unless you stayed at Virginia’s house, where her step mum would vacuum in the nude at the same time you were watching Countdown, her bushy fanny just as wild as her newly permed hair.
You knew what boredom was. You spent time with it often, and our mothers would say things like “boredom doesn’t live here” or “if you say that word one more time…” You spent hours sitting in trees, just swinging our legs. Peering over the neighbour’s fence. Listening to the cricket on the radio. Waiting for Hey Hey It’s Saturday so you could all sit down and see what Dickie had to say.
You remember when cassette tapes started including lyrics in the fold-out cover, so you didn’t have to write down the words. The best gift you ever got was a mixtape of your boyfriend’s favourite songs, recorded on his JVC dual cassette boombox.
You remember before credit cards, there was lay-by — six weeks to pay off the jeans you “had to have,” the receipt stuffed in your purse so the shopkeeper could look up your deposit in the ledger under the counter.
We all knew someone with a microwave, and some families used it to cook everything — from popcorn to pot roasts, pots of coffee to cheese burritos. Anything that tasted better heated up or melted was wrapped and zapped. It was the year of convenience.
You rang home reverse-charge from the telephone booth to ask if you could stay out later, and played Frogger at the fish and chip shop every Friday after school while you waited for $2 chips with chicken salt to share with the kids down the street.
You wore lolly necklaces, played hopscotch, rode your bikes across the city, snuck out to sit on the roof, wrote fan mail to Bevan at Young Talent Time, watched 60 Minutes with your parents, wished you had a dishwasher, collected Cabbage Patch Kids, Care Bears or Strawberry Shortcake dolls, and played in the street with the kids from the neighbourhood.
You grew up in a world that no longer exists — and it made you who you are.
Why That Matters Now
You watched your own parents run themselves into the ground without a second thought for their own bodies, because nobody told them it mattered. Not out of neglect — that’s just how it was. You work, you push through, you don’t complain, you get on with it. Looking after yourself wasn’t part of the conversation.
And now you watch the generation coming up behind you chasing quick fixes. The 10-day challenge. The overnight transformation. The hand-out, the shortcut, the “hack.” Everything solved before you’ve even had to try.
You’re standing between the two — and neither one is you.
You don’t want a shortcut and you’re not looking for a hand-out. You understand self-responsibility because you’ve lived it your whole life. You built your career, your family, your business off the back of showing up and doing the work, not by waiting for someone to hand it to you. Nobody’s ever done it for you, and honestly, you wouldn’t trust it if they tried.
That’s exactly why Encore Pilates works for you.We Work With You, Not For You
We’re not a quick fix and we’re not a hand-out. We’re solution-based — which means we bring you the method, the expertise and the plan, but we expect you to bring the same thing you’ve always brought to everything else in your life: consistency and self-responsibility.
The Encore Method will get you where you want to go. But you have to show up. That’s the deal — the same deal you’ve been making with yourself since you were a kid sitting in a tree, working out how to get where you wanted to be entirely on your own.
This is why Generation X and Encore Pilates fit. We’re not selling you an easy way out. We’re giving you a real way forward, and we’re walking it with you.
